David Wu has been the voice of middle-class Oregon families in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1999. He works to spur Oregon's economic recovery; strengthen our nation's schools; support entrepreneurs and innovative businesses; and help industries turn cutting-edge research into new products, services, and jobs.

As a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, David advocates for Oregon's students. He helped pass historic investments in federal student aid that are making college accessible to more Oregonians. He also fought to secure funding for K-12 education so that children can learn in smaller classes and our nation's schools can make much-needed repairs and renovations. David is a tireless supporter of training programs for jobs in growing fields, including clean energy and health care technology. And as co-chair of the Congressional Community College Caucus, David has worked to improve job-training programs and secure modern technology for community colleges nationwide.

David's fifteen years of experience in the Portland business and high-tech communities make him uniquely qualified to represent the "Silicon Forest" district in Congress. David understands that innovation is the key to our nation's economic recovery and long-term growth. He also knows that small businesses are vital to creating jobs and economic stability. To grow Oregon's innovation economy, David uses his role as the chair of the Science Committee's Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation to encourage new business investment and high-tech research. Also, as a member of the New Democrat Coalition—a group of pro-growth moderate Democrats in the House of Representatives—David works to craft common-sense policies to help our nation's private sector create stable, high-wage jobs for America's working families.

David also believes that America's strength comes from our commitment to the ideals upon which our nation was founded. As the first Chinese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, David is a consistent supporter of human rights at home and abroad. As such, he supports free trade agreements that include provisions to protect basic human rights, in addition to environmental and labor standards.

David has lived the American dream. In 1961, at the age of six, David immigrated with his family to the United States. He was educated in public schools, earned an undergraduate degree from Stanford University in 1977, and received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1982. After law school, David clerked for a federal judge in Portland. He joined the law firm of Miller Nash in 1984, and in 1988 David co-founded the law firm Cohen & Wu. For a decade, David served Oregon's high-tech industry and numerous small businesses across northwest Oregon. He counts his work helping to build new businesses that have thrived and provided high-paying jobs for Oregonians among his proudest achievements.
